Extending XSLT with JScript, C#, and Visual Basic .NET
X SL Transformations (XSLT) is known for making hard things easy and easy things hard. It can simplify complex transformation logic that would be extremely tedious to implement otherwise. But at the same time, XSLT's functional programming model can sometimes make it extremely difficult to perform trivial business logic. Often extending XSLT with traditional languages like VBScript, JScript®, or any Microsoft® .NET-supported language can offer the best of both worlds (for an introduction to XSLT see the article that I cowrote with Don Box and John Lam in the August 2000 issue).

XSLT Standard Library
The XSLT Standard Library, xsltsl, provides the XSLT developer with a set of XSLT templates for commonly used functions. These are implemented purely in XSLT, that is they do not use any extensions.

The XSLDataGrid: XSLT Rocks Ajax
Most web applications have a requirement somewhere in their interface for a tabular view of data -- often, a view of the rows in a database table. In some cases, the use of a static HTML is appropriate, but users have become increasingly accustomed to richer, more malleable interfaces that let them change column widths, order, etc. Among the application widgets in the web developer's toolbox, the dynamic datagrid is an often cumbersome one to set up. This article will outline a datagrid component powered by XSLT and JavaScript that aims to achieve easy setup, high performance, and minimum dependence.

XSLT for Word/RTF
Altova® StyleVision® simplifies the creation of XSLT 1.0/2.0 stylesheets for transforming XML and database data to attractive Microsoft Word/RTF pages. It’s easy to transform XML and database data into Word documents or RTF (rich text format) files with StyleVision. The unique StyleVision design interface allows you to visually design stylesheets to produce Word/RTF output from XML – or a database – quickly and easily. In addition, that same design simultaneously produces an Authentic form, as well as HTML and PDF output and the associated stylesheets. Based on your design, StyleVision auto-generates standards conformant XSLT 1.0 stylesheets with XPath 1.0 expressions. It also includes complete implementations of the powerful new XSLT 2.0 and XPath 2.0 specifications from the W3C. These new versions include significant improvements and new features that improve code stability and reusability, as well as an impressive array of new functions and operators. In addition, XSLT 2.0 support in StyleVision is schema-aware. Schema-awareness provides additional mechanisms for error isolation, simplified debugging, and enhanced code performance. In all, XSLT/XPath 2.0 allow you create stylesheets that are much more powerful and highly efficient.

XSLT Design for HTML
With its unique approach to XSLT stylesheet development, Altova® StyleVision® abstracts away the underlying XSL syntax, allowing you to create XSLT 1.0 and 2.0 stylesheets visually, using drag-and-drop functionality, which takes considerably less time and reduces the occurrence of errors. In StyleVision, you create one graphical design that simultaneously produces standards-conformant XSLT 1.0/2.0 and XSL:FO stylesheets for transforming XML or database data into HTML as well as Word/RTF, and PDF formats. You can view and save the standards-based XSLT stylesheets at any time during the design process.

Authentic forms let business users directly query and edit XML documents or relational databases without being exposed to the underlying technology. The visual design paradigm used in StyleVision is so straightforward; you simply drag and drop project contents and design elements into your working stylesheet, and you are automatically prompted when options exist. You can preview your output at any time in XSLT 1.0/2.0, HTML, Word/RTF, XSL:FO, PDF, and Authentic view, so you always know how your project is coming along. Stylesheets designed with StyleVision can be based on XML Schemas, DTDs, and databases and can support business logic validation, table handling, input formatting, date control, and much more. All these features combine to make Altova StyleVision 2006 the ultimate tool for developing multi-purpose stylesheets.

XSLT designer (XML2HTML) freeware tool
Check out dotXSL, free XSLT designer tool for turning XML into web pages (XML2HTML). dotXSL is freeware, so you can use it for any purpose. dotXSL features WYSIWYG, drag-and-drop, ease of use, multi-tabbed professional developer's interface, modern look and feel, tons of advanced features, XSL/Xpath/CSS programming etc. dotXSL is great for XML reports, pages and sites. It also has XSL component feature, which is the ability to build XSL code that will work with virtually any XML, not just the XML it was designed to work. This is achieved by creating XML2XML mapping before XML is actually fed to XSL code. For instance, web menu can be created with many different XML structures - wouldn't be nice to create XSL component that will render it - and then use this XSL code with any XML? dotXSL supports all popular XSLT processors (MSXML, Saxon, Xalan, libxslt with PHP etc.). It also has publish feature for easy upload to web site, as well as live XML publishing feature to PHP (for example if you want to add live RSS to your web site). There are too many features to mention here, but entire Help System is on the web site so you can see for yourself. All of this is neatly explained in Flash Videos you can play on web site and get started in minutes - all FREE!
